The Dual 6850 Board
Post production board modifications:
CON ACIA modification

This modification is ONLY required when running System ROM V1.0 or later.

Isolate IC6 pin 5
Connect IC6 pin 23 to IC6 pin 24

System ROM V1.0 or later and hardware handshaking (flow control)

IC6 pin 5 can be left floating or connected to and used as a logic level signal to control the flow of data from the attached Console Device to the Mega-68000 Computer System.

When IC6 pin 5 is left floating end of line delays and possibly inter-character delays will need to be inserted by the Console Device when sending data to the Mega-68000 to avoid data loss.

The Console Device is typically a PC running Terminal Emulation software. If you require such software download "Tera Term" - it is free + extremely easy to setup and use. Tera Term will emulate a VT100 Terminal on a PC and it allows you to specify end of line and inter-character delays. This basic setup will do, but it can be improved upon - so read on.

When IC6 pin 5 is used as a flow control signal end of line and inter-character delays are not necessary. The flow control signal works as follows:

LOW: CON ACIA can accept data
HIGH: CON ACIA is busy

If the Transmitter (Console Device) can monitor this signal and not send data to the Mega-68000 when it is busy, no data will be lost AND maximum transfer speed will be achieved.
